The Contemporary Art Galleries is pleased to present its first show in collaboration with a guest curator, Prem Krishnamurthy. Krishnamurthy is a partner of the design studio Wkshps and Co-Artistic Director of FRONT International 2021, the Cleveland triennial of contemporary art. He was previously founder of P! and Project Projects in New York. This show is the first in a series of international exhibitions by Krishnamurthy, each articulating a particular approach to contemporary creative practice.

Born out of an experimental approach to exhibition-making, Polymorph! Part I: Bumpiness is a pedagogical exhibition with an activated display. Between large-scale text, graphics, and photography, the show frames work by artists and designers across scales and media—including typefaces, books, albums, collages, photographs, paintings, sculptures, films, identity programs, exhibitions, buildings, and even belief systems—as a proposal for how to approach creative production differently.

According to Krishnamurthy: “I’ve enjoyed a long relationship with the University of Connecticut, Storrs, and its art program, which offered me my first opportunity as a teacher over fifteen years ago. It’s exciting to return to premiere my newest thinking around ways of making art, design, and exhibitions — and what these ‘bumpy’ approaches can teach us in this challenging historical moment.”

The exhibition opening will mark the launch of a new version of P!DF, the experimental, ever-changing electronic book by Prem Krishnamurthy. P!DF is published by O-R-G and available online at http://o-r-g.com/apps/p-df.

A Collaborative Approach to Bumpiness
In connection with Polymorph! Part I: Bumpiness, Krishnamurthy will lead an intensive, interdisciplinary workshop for students, organized by UCONN’s Graphic Design Department. The workshop will allow participants to react to the term “bumpiness” in multiple media, resulting in a pop-up presentation in the Arena Gallery (adjacent to CAG) during the exhibition.
